Bedfordshire Graduate Wins Prize for Research into Brand Sustainability

A recent University of Bedfordshire graduate has been recognised for outstanding achievement in marketing after producing research exploring how brands can build greater trust around their sustainability claims.

Outstanding research in digital marketing

Joe Barnett, who graduated just a few weeks ago with a degree in Marketing, has won the Institute of Data and Marketing (IDM) Professor Derek Holder Prize for the Best Dissertation in Digital & Data-Driven Marketing at the University of Bedfordshire.

Joe's dissertation explores how brands in the US outdoor clothing market can bridge the sustainability credibility gap – demonstrating that building long-term brand equity requires moving beyond generic eco-claims towards data-driven transparency, circularity and verifiable supply chain proof.

The prestigious prize package includes a £300 cash prize, 12-month complimentary Data & Marketing Association (DMA) Student Membership and an additional online DMA Award-level qualification of Joe's choice, worth £500. The prize is generously funded by the Marketing Skills Trust.

A rewarding validation

Joe said: "Receiving the IDM Professor Derek Holder Prize for Best Dissertation in Digital & Data-Driven Marketing is an incredible honour and a very rewarding validation of my work. It feels great that my efforts throughout my studies and passion for marketing have helped me achieve this, and it will further motivate me towards my future ambitions.

"Thank you to Giles Robertson, Sallie Phillips, Daniel Anitei, and the rest of the Marketing course team at the University of Bedfordshire for all your support and this recognition, and to the Data & Marketing Association UK and the Marketing Skills Trust for the generous prizes.”

Career-powered education in action

Joe's success is an example of the University's Career-Powered Education in action, with students encouraged to apply their learning to real-world challenges and develop the practical, career-ready skills needed to succeed beyond graduation.

His research tackles a current challenge for the marketing industry, combining data-driven thinking with sustainability, consumer trust and brand strategy. It demonstrates how students can use their academic work to explore complex industry issues while developing expertise that can be applied in their future careers.
